What is lagna
Lagna (the rising sign, ascendant) is the zodiac sign that rises on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. In Jyotish lagna outranks Sun and Moon: it determines which sign occupies house 1, and all other 12 houses are counted from there.
Lagna shifts roughly every 2 hours, so an accurate birth time is critical. Two children born on the same day 2-3 hours apart can have different lagnas → different charts → different lives.
Why lagnesha matters
Lagnesha is the planet that rules the lagna sign. For example, if your lagna is Aries (sign 1, ruled by Mars), then Mars is your lagnesha. If lagna is Virgo (Mercury), the lagnesha is Mercury, and so on.
Lagnesha works as the chart's «advocate»: where it sits, that's where you invest your life energy; whatever happens to it happens to you. A strong lagnesha (own sign, exalted, kendra/trikona) means you're healthy, successful, your character "works". A weak one (debilitated, in 6/8/12, under malefics) drains health and vitality.
How to read your lagnesha
- Find your lagna sign (on the «Chart» page — the very top block).
- Note the ruler of that sign (see the table below).
- Find where that ruler sits in your chart — that's your life focus.

Lagna nakshatra
Beyond the lagna sign, there's the lagna nakshatra — one of the 27 lunar mansions that contains the rising point. Each nakshatra has its own ruler (the same 9 grahas as in the Vimshottari dasha). The lagna nakshatra adds a subtle flavor to the personality: its ruler often becomes a "second skin" for the native.
